The Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC) at Texas State University strengthens the academic experience by coordinating learning support services that reinforce student engagement and persistence. Through peer-based and professional programs, SLAC promotes effective learning strategies and fosters and environment for students to develop necessary skills for continued academic success.

SLAC offers an integrated network of academic support, including the programs listed below, to extend classroom learning by helping students to apply course concepts and build study strategies.

The STUDY, operating from two primary centers, provides tutoring in a broad range of courses across disciplines. Study materials covering topics such as academic skills development, test preparation, and foundational subject content are also available.

The VASC offers focused academic guidance and transitional support for military-connected students, providing resources that promote academic adjustment and ongoing achievement in coursework.

Supplemental Instruction is a collaborative learning model for students in historically difficult courses. Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SI’s) facilitate regular study sessions that strengthen content mastery and positive study skills and habits.

Success Coaching provides tailored strategies to improve academic work and productivity. Through a series of individual meetings with a trained Coach, students identify their strengths and challenges and create a personal plan to monitor and track appropriate behaviors and assess areas of growth.

SLAC staff members continually foster outreach in the campus community by providing informational and interactive presentations on test-taking and anxiety management, time management, note-taking, and other topics. Upon request, SLAC’s staff will design specialized programs on study skills and academic improvement to fit the needs of a campus club, organization, or professor.

SLAC services and resources are available to students at both the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses. Additional information, including program schedules and participation guidelines, can be found on the SLAC website.

Through these coordinated academic engagement efforts, SLAC supports student learning, progression, and integration into the university’s scholarly community.
