Mission Statement

The Department of communication disorders is committed to innovative instruction, expansion of knowledge and community-based collaboration to create a vibrant and supportive learning community that engages and inspires students, faculty, staff, and clients. Rigorous academic and clinical training that is grounded in evidence-based practice prepares students to serve individuals with communication disorders and their families in an ethical and culturally competent manner.

The graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology educates and prepares speech-language pathologists through rigorous academic and clinical training that is grounded in evidence-based practice to serve individuals with communication and swallowing disorders and their families in an ethical and culturally competent manner.

The graduate program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Vision Statement

The vision of the Department of Communication Disorders is to become the leading program in the State of Texas for educating future speech-language pathologists for clinical, research, and leadership roles ready to work successfully with individuals across the lifespan from all cultures and linguistic backgrounds. 

Immunization Requirements

It is the policy of the College of Health Professions that each student must provide a health report completed by a physician or licensed healthcare provider, and must have current, specific immunizations before the student can be placed in a clinical or internship assignment. Information on these requirements and the required forms may be obtained through the department office.

Background Check and Drug Screening

As a condition for placement in clinical practice sites, students are required to have a criminal background check. Individual sites might require additional background checks and/or drug screening. Information on the background check/drug screening process will be provided by the department. Previous misdemeanor or felony convictions under various titles of the Texas Penal Code may affect eligibility for practitioner license status following graduation.
